Support the engine, drop the subframe crossmember

Set the engine support bar and take up just enough tension to unload the mounts. Remove the front subframe crossmember to gain clearance for the oil pan.

Drain oil, drop the pan

Drain the oil fully and remove the oil pan bolts in a criss-cross pattern. The pan is sealed with a thin bead gasket — it will need a plastic scraper, not a screwdriver, to break free.

Warning: Do not pry against the aluminum block sealing surface

Remove rod caps one cylinder at a time

Rotate the crank so the rod you're working on sits at the bottom of its stroke. Loosen and remove the two rod bolts, then gently tap the cap free. Keep bearings and caps matched to their cylinder — never mix them.

Check clearance with Plastigauge

Lay a strip of Plastigauge across the journal, torque the cap to spec, then remove and measure the crush width against the card. This tells you if standard bearings are correct or if you need undersized ones.

Fit new bearings, torque in two steps

Install the new upper and lower bearing shells dry — no assembly lube needed with modern coated bearings unless the manufacturer specifies otherwise. Torque each rod bolt to 20 Nm, then angle-tighten an additional 100°.

Reinstall pan, refill, and prime

Clean both sealing surfaces completely, apply a fresh gasket, and torque the pan bolts to spec in the correct sequence. Refill with oil and crank the engine with the fuel pump fuse pulled until oil pressure shows on the gauge before a real start.
